Cassava Production

Our Co-operative has diversified to include Cassava because it is a tropical crop that can grow in poor soils with inadequate rainfall. The crop has multiple uses; its starchy root is a source of food for more than 700 million people all over the world and ranks third among the staple food crops in developing countries after rice and maize

Training Programs

The Co-operative provides extensive training programs to its members through its partners. These efforts have empowered local farmers, increased their income, and strengthened the Co-operative’s role in the regional maize market.

5 KEY ACTIVITIES IN THE CO-OPERATIVE MAIZE DEMONSTRATION FARM

Training and capacity building: The demonstration site serves as a practical learning environment where farmers are trained on modern maize farming techniques. This includes hands-on sessions on seed selection, land preparation, planting methods, pest and disease management, and proper fertilizer application. The goal is to equip farmers with the skills needed to increase productivity and ensure sustainable farming practices.

Testing and implementation of agricultural innovations: The site is used to test new maize varieties, fertilizers, and pest control methods before they are introduced to the broader farming community. Farmers can observe the growth and yield of these new varieties and compare them with traditional ones. This helps in assessing the effectiveness of new agricultural technologies and practices in the local context.

Demonstration of best practices in crop management: The site showcases best practices in crop management, such as crop rotation, soil fertility management, and efficient water use techniques like drip irrigation. These demonstrations provide farmers with a visual and practical understanding of how to implement these practices on their farms, leading to improved yields and reduced environmental impact.

Monitoring and evaluation of crop performance: The demonstration site allows for continuous monitoring and evaluation of crop performance throughout the growing season. Farmers and agricultural experts track the progress of maize plants, observe growth patterns, and document any challenges such as pest infestations or adverse weather conditions. This data is crucial for refining farming techniques and making informed decisions in future planting seasons.

Community engagement and knowledge sharing: The demonstration site also serves as a hub for community engagement, where farmers from different areas can come together to share experiences, challenges, and solutions. Field days and open demonstrations are often organized, inviting not only cooperative members but also other local farmers and stakeholders. This fosters a sense of community and encourages the adoption of best practices across the region.
